Quick Reviews

I have not been on in a while, so here are a couple quick one sentence reviews….As usual Youtube trailers and such included.

Movies
Watchmen:Directors Cut – This is the release we should have gotten in the theaters, mush better story flow and details on the characters.

District 9: This was awesome, went in actually knowing very little about the story line, left amazed, imagine seeing Stars Wars in 1977 for the first time.

Star Trek (2009) – I have always been a fan of the Next Generation iteration of the show and the movies but never considered myself a Trekkie , but this film was a great fun ride, reminded me of what great summers movies should be.

Transformers 2 – This was very underwhelming, loud, offensive and stupid.

G.I. Joe:The Rise of Cobra – What a stupid movie, but it was fun and I enjoyed every minute.

Hurt Locker – Looking for a war movie, this is the one to watch, its intense and will leave you exhausted.

Books
World War Z- The zombie apocalypse has happened and Mel Brooks’ son is doing the interviews on the aftermath….Awesome summer read. (below is an excerpt read by Mark Hamill)

The Invention of Hugo Cabret – a great book for young readers, an inventive narrative with amazing illustrations through out.

Wow, an Awesome Blog Update

I can’t believe I haven’t posted in a month.  Hard to believe that people are still showing up; albeit not many.  I thought I would post some stuff about Comicon, but there are much better places to get that information.  Plus, I haven’t been able to follow to much of anything lately as my real life job has been keeping me crazy busy.  In the last month I have been out of town on vacation, brought a new manufacturing system on-line at work, which took many long days and weekends to complete, and now I am prepping on closing a location and bring the IT equipment from there to where I am to take on that work….long story short I have been busy.

So here is a couple things I have stumbled across in the last 30 days.

Here is a pretty interesting article from the blog Geek Gril Diva, on how to keep your geek guy happy.  And no it is not all sexy and video games, but i think that would be a mighty fine start.

5 Tips on Proper Geek (guy) Maintenance.

My new favorite game.  X-men Origins:Wolverine.  Yeah the movie sucked, but the game is worth the price.  Remember in the movie and Wolverine kept saying “I am the best at what I do and I don’t do nice things”  or something to that respect.  Int eh game you get to be the true bad-ass Wolverine.  This is not a game for young children.  You get to really mess up the bad-guys. There is plenty of blood, dismemberment, beheadings and violence galore.  If you get to I highly recommend picking  this up.

Killzone or SPL depending on where your from.  Here is a clip from the movie, this is a must own for martial arts fans.

Batman Opens June 23, 1989

20 years ago this weekend Tim Burton’s Batman opened in theaters.  I would have been 14, almost 15 then.  I remember going to the movies with my younger brother, he was probably 10 at the time.  Next, to Superman which I only saw on cable at that point, this was my first superhero movie that I got to witness on the big screen.  At this point I was a huge Batman fan and comic book reader.  My favorites were G.I. Joe ( which I may have dropped by this point) and of course Batman. I remember being extremely excited to go to see this movie, I would bought the novelization, the soundtrack and made it point to soak up anything related to movie that  I could, music videos, interviews, the TOPPS movie cards which I have a compete run of and still have to this day,  and articles to say the least.  I even had the Batman t-shirt that everyone else in the world was wearing that summer. Actually, I had two.    I remember a pillow case my brother had, that my mom just found and packed in with some stuff for my kids.

                                                                                  batman

Of course this was  pre-internet and movie trailers were only something you could see at the movies, I don’t think I even saw the trailer before going to see this movie.  My only knowledge of the film was ads in the in the comics, posters and the rest of the media onslaught that Warner Bros forced upon us that summer.  It was the summer of Batman, and this  probably the first movie that my parents let me take my brother to without supervision.  Luckily, this movie ran for a while that summer because I remember not being able to go see it opening weekend because I was in Canada on a Boy Scout trip.  I do remember going to see it during the day for a matinee, the theater was pretty empty if I recall correctly.  But, I remember walking out in awe, and awe that I had not experienced since seeing Return of the Jedi a few years earlier.

I still have spot in my heart for this movie I think I will re-watch it tonight in celebration of its 20 year anniversary.  1989’s Batman….AWESOME.

Sribblenauts

Coming later this year is a new game for the Nintendo DS called Scribblenauts. I heard Jeff Cannata talking about this game onTWIT (this week in tech) with Leo Laporte.  This game sounds like it is going to be the next major game for the DS.  The premise seems to be very simple:

From scribblenauts.com:

The premise is simple: The player uses the touch-screen to help their character, Maxwell, acquire the star in each level by solving a series of puzzles. The twist is, in order to solve each puzzle the players use the notepad to write down objects that are used to reach the goal.

This game is all about experimentation, imagination and endless replay value. Think of any person, place or thing, write it down, and watch it come alive! Write Anything, Solve Everything!

Here is a video from teh folks over at nintendodorks.com from E3 of them actually playing the game.  They have titled this God vs the Krakken.

Sherlock Holmes

sherlockholmesWe have your first look at the trailer for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes film due in theaters Christmas Day this year. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams this version of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character definitely has that Ritchie flair to it (the bare knuckle boxing angle called bartitsu, comic dialogue, etc…). It’s quite clear that along with the use of this martial art bartitsu and the general action-oriented tone of the film, the filmmakers are looking to take Holmes well beyond being a mere crime solver to turn him into a crime fighter. Given the popularity of comic book heroes at the box office it’s a smart way to repackage an old franchise for a new audience.

Bartitsu – In the film Homes employs a martial art system called bartitsu, also known as the “gentlemanly art of self defense,” that originates in England and was developed between the years 1898 and 1902. It is referenced by Doyle in one of his Sherlock Holmes books.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Like most gamers, both hardcore and casual, I fall into the casual camp, I played the crap out of CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE. I liked the last Call of Duty game, World at War.  Liked not loved, I loved COD4.

But Infinity Ward’s work on MODERN WARFARE still makes the franchise the best war game on the market. Here is the trailer for the new game. I am not too sure what I think of the new trailer as it looks like 80% cut scenes.  But it still looks cool as hell and I will surely be picking this one up when it hits the market in November.
